Refugees flee horrific violence and persecution. They have no other choice but to flee.

Some make it across borders to refugee camps. Some sell everything to buy their way onto a boat that they hope will take them to safety. Some people take a plane.

Some make it. Some don’t.

Some people end up in Australia. We lock them up, behind fences. Often for years. Even though they have committed no crime.

We offer them little help in a situation which is confusing and painful. Staff at these ‘detention centres’ have often have no training and no understanding or interest in the stories, experiences and needs of these people.

Some refugees develop serious mental health issues.

Eventually, some are released and allowed to live in Australia either temporarily or permenantly. They are able to receive the same benefits as any other Australian. They are expected (and very willing) to find work. Some are also deported (and are often killed once they returned as a result of the same persecution they fled from). Some commit suicide.

Australia can do more to help the refugee. Australia is perfectly capable of disbanding expensive and inhumane mandatory detention in favour of a more compassionate system. Such a system is very possible and works in virtually every other country.

This post is me blerging after getting very worked up after a conversation I had just before. I don’t usually get worked up about things. Which means you should pay attention to this. Please, re-think refugees http://www.rethinkrefugees.com.au/the-facts/fact-1/
